Joint VSWIR-TIR retrievals of earth's surface and atmosphere

چکیده
Remote spectroscopy of terrestrial ecosystems generally falls into one two categories: UV, Visible and ShortWave InfraRed (VSWIR) methods measuring reflected solar illumination, Thermal (TIR) radiation emitted from the Earth's surface. Both interpret measured radiance with inversion algorithms that estimate surface reflectance, emissivity, temperatures, atmospheric state. However, regimes have traditionally used independent methods. Here we present first simultaneous upwelling spectrum UV through VSWIR Infrared. Linking Seasonal Foliar Chemistry to VSWIR-TIR Spectroscopy across California Ecosystems
The synergy between the reflected solar spectrum (Visible Near Infrared/ Short Wave Infrared or VSWIR) and the emitted spectrum (Thermal Infrared or TIR) for identifying plant species’ foliar chemistry has been largely unexplored. In the 2013 spring and summer seasons, fresh leaves from sixteen common shrub and tree species were sampled from locations ranging from the Sierra Nevada mountains, t...

Surface biosignatures of exo-earths: remote detection of extraterrestrial life.
Exoplanet discovery has made remarkable progress, with the first rocky planets having been detected in the central star's liquid water habitable zone. The remote sensing techniques used to characterize such planets for potential habitability and life rely solely on our understanding of life on Earth. The vegetation red edge from terrestrial land plants is often used as a direct signature of lif...
متن کاملA joint atmosphere-ocean inversion for surface fluxes of carbon dioxide: 2. Regional results
[1] We report here the results from a coupled ocean-atmosphere inversion, in which atmospheric CO2 gradients and transport simulations are combined with observations of ocean interior carbon concentrations and ocean transport simulations to provide a jointly constrained estimate of air-sea and air-land carbon fluxes. While atmospheric data have little impact on regional air-sea flux estimates, ...
متن کاملMars Atmosphere History and Surface Interactions
A fundamental question about the surface of Mars is whether it was ever conducive to life in the past, which is related to the broader questions of how the planet’s atmosphere evolved over time and whether past climates supported widespread liquid water. Taken together, geochemical data and models support the view that much of the original atmospheric inventory was lost to space before about 3....
